Mary Ellen Mark started out as a photographer on sets of movies such as Fellini's "Satyricon" or Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now". It was her later work however, such as the tender images of social outcasts (prostitutes / transvestites / circus troupes) that really established her as one of the greatest portrait photographers of our time. Her style kind of reminds me of Sally Mann's, but while Mann is known for her "romanticized" depictions of growing up, Mark is a lot more raw.
