MY 2011 FAVOURITES

End of the year is always a great moment to think about what we would like to improve. But why not reminisce about the things that made us very happy too? Here is my personal section of photos that I really enjoyed taking. I'm not sure whether it was for the atmosphere of the place, the events that happened or the people featured. Perhaps, it was all of those things combined, as that's what ultimately creates a beautiful moment.

The events were as follows: Givenchy, Valentino & Chanel haute couture shows in Paris, Jean-Paul Gaultier and his muse Farida Khelfa backstage at his show, Lou Lesage in her family apartment in Paris, Jonathan Heaf and Valentine Fillol-Cordier in London, Acne, Meadham Kirchhoff & Mary Katrantzou shows in September, Ella Purnell on the set of 'Candy' and brutalist tower blocks commissioned by B magazine. Last but not least, I'm really happy about the 'Holly & Kasia' book, which includes my photos and was art directed by the amazing Hannah Ridley from Ida Rhoda.

Great music from an even greater movie - 'All that I love' (Poland, 2009). Watched it with a few Polish friends in London (all of them from the seaside) and we all felt pretty nostalgic.

HEYGATE ESTATE BACK IN MARCH

A few outtakes from the B magazine story about brutalism, which I shot back in March. The day I went to shoot Heygate Estate was probably one of the most beautiful days of the year. I arrived there at 5pm and stayed until around 7! Within those 2-3 hours, the sky seemed to have changed colour multiple times, going from grey to pink to violet to blue, with fluo lights accentuating all of the buildings's many textures and shades.

JUST DRIVE

I might be one of the few people who are not entirely sold on Ryan Gosling's character in "Drive". Throughout the movie, I just couldn't figure out who is he: a good guy that is ultimately searching for love or a cold-blooded murderer? Perhaps, he embodies both qualities, which could easily prove that, yes, humans are complex creatures and we're actually not that easy to pigeonhole. Or perhaps I need to watch the movie again.

'Less Than Zero' - 'Drive's stylistic predecessor from 1987

However, what I feel does make the film special is the soundtrack and the visual language that Nicolas Winding Refn adopts - very nostalgic and 80s-reminiscent, with the exception for a few (very contemporary!) violent scenes. This song from Electric Youth, which plays at the final credits, is a particular gem.

The New York Times street and society photographer Bill Cunningham has been a fixture and regular chronicler of fashion weeks for decades. The new documentary follows the 80+ snapper at work as well as showing a more personal side to his story - the food he eats, the bike he rides every day. Even the tiny apartment where he used to live - one of the now-defunct artist studios in Carnegie Hall - gets a feature, bringing us on a journey to an extraordinary, time-warped world. What matters here are not so much the technical skills, but more the enthusiasm - something that both Cunningham and his fellow neighbour, portrait photographer Editta Sherman, have nourished for over 60 years.

I Love Hot Dogs is my new favourite blog! A must-see for any movie maniac (especially if like me, you prefer some oldies to the new Jennifer Aniston rom coms!), the blog asks creatives to list their top 10 films, chronicles some of the weirdest/most amazing moments from cinema's past, and is packed full of inspirational women such as vintage Drew Barrymore, Rita Hayworth and Claudia Cardinale. The latter usually come under the caption "HUBBA HUBBA", so easy to spot.

So if you find yourself looking for something to watch, I can't think of a better place for recommendations.

Who? Holly Hay and Kasia Bobula, London-based photographers, both regular contributors to AnOther.

What? Holly and Kasia is the first publication from Ida Rhoda, art directed by Hannah Ridley. Featuring the backstage photography of Hay and Bobula it offers a beautiful glimpse into the world behind the fashion show as seen through the eyes of two girls. Raising interesting questions on how girls photograph girls and whether their own ideals are projected onto their subjects, the book pictures numerous famous faces – including Arizona Muse and Jessica Stam – in intimate situations and moments in between.

Why? Both Hay and Bobula’s aesthetics have a magical and captivating quality. Hay acts as an observer, capturing time as it passes by; making the viewer feel as if they are there in the moment. Bobula is often more upfront and personal, engaging with her subjects and presenting images as if in conversation. Whilst the catwalk essentially acts as showcase to the upcoming season’s collections with models acting as walking clothes hangers, Hay and Bobula add more personality and emotion taking a look behind the scenes of not only the show but the performance of each girl.

Holly and Kasia launches at Beach London Gallery, Shoreditch September 13 from 7–9pm.

LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD

I've been meaning to watch Alain Resnais's 'Last Year in Marienbad' for some time now, so I was really happy when I saw that London's BFI is screening it for the whole of July. Final verdict? Great cinematography, wonderful clarinet music and of course - breathtaking setting (parts of Schloss Schleissheim in Germany) and costumes (Coco Chanel). The film tells a somehow fragmented story of two people who randomly meet at a hotel. The man claims they met the previous year in Marienbad, the woman doesn't seem to believe him. Throughout the film, the story seems to be moving back in forth in time, and we can never be sure whether what the man says has really happened. The pace of the movie is somehow slow for today's standards, and the acting a tad too dramatic, but given its beautiful styling and original style of narration, I think it's definitely worth watching. Even if it's just for a couple of scenes that you might find visually inspiring.

IRVING PENN IN QUOTES

Irving Penn is one of my favourite photographers of all time. Hence, you can imagine my excitement when I stumbled onto an old copy of Photography Annual (1966!) with a lengthy interview with Penn himself in a bookstore in Florence.

Here are some of the quotes from this brutally honest yet very educational interview.

About colour:

"I think that b&w pictures are intrinsically finer than colour. I think that I have never seen a really great colour photograph."

About photographing famous people:

"It's painful and very exhausting. It's a kind of surgery; you cut an incision into their lives, you move into their circumstances and then you pin them down while you penetrate even further into their personalities. It's the most painful kind of photography and after almost every sitting I wish I hadn't gotten into that kind of thing. It's a matter of controlling a person and yet wanting not to control him too much so that he can still reveal something that is true of himself."

About portraits:

"This is of course problem A in portrait photography - to get past the facade that people would like to present."

About people disliking their own pictures:

"Most of the time the ones who dislike the pictures the most confirm to me that the picture has hit home and is probably truer than I know. Nobody minds a boring picture, they mind a picture that has gotten to the soft core."

About commercial photography:

"The ideal commercial photograph is one that is highly sensual. It is however a controlled and used sensuality. (...) As a matter of fact, advertising clients of successful companies seem to value the sensual picture more than editors of magazines do, because they know that is a way to get at buying the public."

THE PUBLIC HAS A 5 YEAR MEMORY AND THAT'S IT

A story about lust, fame, ambition and self-destruction, High Art is a 1998 film from Lisa Cholodenko, whose main female character - the photographer - is said to be loosely based around Nan Goldin. Or at least, her drug-inspired, moody photographs are. The film is really beautifully shot and its depictions of the art world (with the magazine editor interested only in "which galleries did she show at") and the reality of the craft (with the photographer being so uninspired that she resorts to taking pictures underwater or taking bland shots of her mother) are really spot-on. All in all, great piece of 90s underground cinema and such an inspiration too.

I shot the beautiful French actress/singer Lou Lesage for the new L'Officiel. Her family's flat is situated in the most incredible 1960s tower block in Paris and is packed full of vintage gadgets: hundreds of records, photos, posters, ha, even space age speakers! All in all, we had a great time frolicking around the flat, smoking and, of course, listening to Lou's music and Ennio Morricone.

Along the 'Candy' line, 'Pretty Baby' is yet another movie about a young prostitute. The story might be a bit morbid at times and the image of semi-clas teenage Brooke Shields quite controversial, but the cinematography in the film is seriously breathtaking. Thank you Anh for bringing this to my attention.

It's no secret Meadham Kirchoff are some of today's most imaginative and daring designers, but this season, they've also proved their knack for creating real desirable clothing. Multiple nods to Chanel's tweed jacket as well as styling inspired by a funeral ceremony (complete with little shrines installed on the runway) made this - in my opinion - LFW's most exciting presentation. Needless to say, those clothes are a dream to photograph too.

I had an extreme pleasure of taking pictures of Gaultier and his muse Farida Khelfa backstage at his couture show. Farida's documentary on Gaultier - 'Jean Paul Gaultier ou les codes bouleversés' - premiered in France in January.
